The most common question we're asked is what it will cost, and the most honest first answer is that it depends. But "it depends" isn't useful on its own — so this page sets out exactly what it depends on, so you know what you're paying for.
The four factors that set the price
First, scope: replacing a switch is not the same as rewiring a flat. Second, materials: the grade of cable, breakers and light fittings is a large share of the cost and varies enormously in the market. Third, access: work inside a closed wall or a tight route takes far longer than exposed work. Fourth, timing: an emergency callout at night is not the same as scheduled work in normal hours.
Why we don't quote a final price over the phone
Because any figure given without seeing the work is a guess, and it usually ends one of two ways: a surprise for the customer at settlement, or corners cut to match the quoted number. We prefer to survey and then give a clear estimate you approve before we start. For small, unambiguous jobs we can give an initial range by phone or WhatsApp.
Why two quotes for the same job differ
A gap between two quotes doesn't automatically mean one is inflated. The real differences come from four things: whether materials are included or it is labour only; the specification of those materials, since cable, sockets and breakers vary in price by multiples across brands; whether testing after completion is included or only the connection itself; and whether making good the wall and paintwork is included or left to you. A quote that is far below the others usually excludes one or more of these. That doesn't make it dishonest — it makes it a quote for a different job. This is why quotes are worth comparing only once they are itemised.
What to ask before agreeing
Four questions prevent most later misunderstanding. First: is the price inclusive of materials, and what specification by name? Second: does it include testing after completion, and do I get the results in writing? Third: what happens if additional work is uncovered once the wall is open — is it priced before it's carried out, or after? Fourth: who is responsible for making good? Any serious electrician answers these clearly and before starting, and a vague answer to any one of them is itself useful information.
A diagnostic visit is not wasted money
People often hesitate to pay for a visit that only establishes what the problem is. But accurate diagnosis is what prevents buying a part that wasn't needed or doing work that doesn't address the cause. A recurring example: a water heater trips the RCD, so the breaker is replaced, then the heater is replaced — and the cause was a broken earth conductor in a junction box. One measurement would have saved both. A visit that ends with a clear account of the cause is usually the cheapest line in the whole job.
