Why Your Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping

A breaker that trips is not a fault in itself. It is a protective device doing exactly what it was fitted to do, and the useful question is never how to stop it tripping — it is what it is protecting you from.

First, work out which circuit it is

Switch off everything on the affected circuit and reset the breaker. If it holds, add loads back one at a time, leaving a few minutes between each, and note what is running when it goes again. If it trips immediately with nothing connected, the fault is in the fixed wiring rather than in anything you plugged in — stop there and leave that circuit off. This one exercise tells an electrician more than any description of the symptom, and it costs you nothing but time.

Overload, short circuit, or earth leakage

Each behaves differently and each has a completely different remedy. An overload trips after a delay, usually under heavy load, and often on a predictable circuit such as the kitchen or air conditioning. A short circuit trips instantly and hard, every time, regardless of load. Earth leakage trips the earth-leakage device rather than the ordinary breaker, and frequently tracks something specific — a water heater, an outdoor circuit after rain, a particular appliance. Which of the three it is decides everything that follows.

The one thing not to do

Do not keep resetting it, and do not fit a larger breaker to make the tripping stop. A larger breaker does not fix the circuit; it raises the current the cable is allowed to carry before anything intervenes, which converts a nuisance into a fire risk. If a breaker will not hold, that circuit needs to stay off until it has been tested.
